Having A Yarn with... Brooke Pender

Brooke Pender

There wouldn't be many more exciting stables to be part of right now than the Mark Kavanagh stable. A potentially big spring awaits for rising star SUPER COOL, former Caulfield Cup favourite DECEMBER DRAW and the horse many believe will take the mantle of best horse in the country, ATLANTIC JEWEL. A girl that has quite alot to do with all 3 of these horse's is stable rider, Brooke Pender. Hopefully there is plenty of winners over the spring for the team and those early mornings for Brooke reap the rewards!

Who inspired you to become a trackwork rider and how did u get into horse racing?

My uncle, Jim Pender is a trainer so I grew up around horses. Between him and my grandpa, Jim Pender Seniors' stories of racing, I was hooked at a young age.

How long have you been involved in racing?

I've been going to the stables and races for as long as I can remember but it wasn't until I was around 14-15 that I started riding track work. So riding wise around 7 years.

How long have you been in Australia and how long have you worked for Mark Kavanagh?

I've been in Australia for 2 and a half years and riding for mark just a little over 2.

You are the regular Trackwork rider for ATLANTIC JEWEL and DECEMBER DRAW. What did you think of them the first time you got on their backs? How's it feel seeing them racing and winning group races?

I rode Jewels (Atlantic Jewel) first click up and you knew she was gonna be something special. She's very relaxed in her fast work, all you have to do is ask her. It's all very easy for her. I actually cried when Double D (December Draw) won his group 1. He's my favourite and such a tough little character. Yeah, I got pretty emotional!

What was the name of your first winner you strapped for Mr Kavanagh?

I don't strap often but maybe HERE DE SPEAKER at Ballarat.

Best horse or horse's you have ever ridden?

What were your impressions of SUPER COOL the first time you rode him and how much do you think he's improved since the Autumn?

This prep is the most I've ever had to do with him. He's a dude, but he's really lazy and doesn't give you much on the track, So it's hard to get a good indication just on his work.

Best jockey you have seen?

Our stable jockey M.Rodd. Such a genuine person and a brilliant rider

Best trainer you have seen or been associated with {apart from mr kavanagh}?

Craig Thornton, Nz Trainer. I learnt so much from him and wouldn't be the rider I am without him teaching me.

What do you see yourself doing in 10 years time

who knows. I wanna ride all over the world. Melbourne's just the beginning! (5 photos)
